Benilde-St. Margaret’s athletics & activities department is pleased to announce the appointment of Brad Anderson as head coach for the BSM football program. As coach and program head, Anderson will oversee the entire grade 7-12 football program at BSM.
“Brad’s experience and integrity as a coach will serve our BSM student-athletes as they grow into leaders on and off the field,” said Rick Johns ’70, director of athletics & activities at BSM. “We are very excited to have Brad joining the Red Knight community. With his deep coaching resumé of building extremely successful programs, Brad cares deeply about the students and is dedicated to education-based athletics. Brad is a great fit for BSM.”
Anderson is a graduate of Wayzata High School where he was an all-conference and all-state football player. After earning a football scholarship from Mankato State University, he transferred to the University of Minnesota where he played one year under Lou Holtz before a career-ending knee injury. Anderson transferred and graduated from Augsburg University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology, earned his Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of St. Thomas and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Administration: K-12 Principal from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota.

I envision the Red Knight football program being one where each student will contribute to our success and along the way experience what it is to be a leader in their own way,” said Coach Anderson, adding, “Success thrives on the understanding that it’s not a solitary endeavor but a collaborative effort, where individuals work together synergistically. I’m eager to harness the incredible athletic talent that BSM showcases across various sports, aiming to cultivate well-rounded, multi-dimensional athletes capable of maintaining competitiveness year-round.”
During his 18 years as the head coach at Wayzata High School Anderson’s teams amassed a 156-47 record and won ten section titles and ten Lake Conference championships. Under his leadership, Anderson’s teams also won three state championships in 2005, 2008, and 2010 and two runners up finishes in 2004 and 2011. Four players on teams coached by Anderson have gone on to play in the NFL.
Anderson is a ten-time section coach of the year and has been twice named class coach of the year. One of his favorite football memories was when Wayzata played Cretin Derham Hall, with Marion Barber III as a back for Wayzata and Joe Mauer was the quarterback for CDH. The game was hard fought and resulted in a Wayzata victory.
“Building a winning football program requires fostering a culture of dedication and the pursuit of excellence both on and off the field,” Coach Anderson noted. “I am excited for the journey ahead!” BSM will host a team meeting on Tuesday, February 6 immediately after school in the main atrium for players to meet their new coach. A football family meet and greet will be held at a later date.
